Fortnite on PC - the Problems Faced and Solution

It is incredibly frustrating when you indulge in a good game like Fortnite, but it starts lagging. Either you face ping problems or latency issues. Whatever the issue is, playing a smooth game is out of the picture.

Just imagine you are building a wall in Fortnite trying to defend yourself from your opponent. Your ping determines how fast your instructions are sent to the server and then back to your screen.

Ping is measured in ms (milliseconds), which is a thousandth of a second. So, a ping of 200 ms means a delay of 0.2 seconds which seems a lot while playing the game. We gamers want the lowest ping possible while playing any game.

It's because the less ping you have, the less time it will take for your game to respond to the server and the less latency you will experience. This means you will build walls sooner, and your aim at the targets will be more responsive, enabling you to hit more shots.

Simply put, lowering your ping means enhancing your gaming experience in Fortnite. Now that you know how these network issues can cause problems and why reducing your ping and lag is essential let's start fixing them with different solutions.

Solutions to fix Fortnite high ping issues

Solution 1: Meet the Minimum Hardware Requirements

To play heavy games like Fortnite, it is essential to meet minimum hardware requirements to load your game. Here are the minimum system requirements you should have to play Fortnite on PC.

  • ● Operating System - Windows 7/8/10
  • ● Video card - Intel HD 4000
  • ● System type - 64-bit
  • ● Processor - Core i3 2.4 GHz
  • ● Memory - 4 GB Ram
  • ● DirectX - DirectX 11
  • ● HDD space - 16 GB

Now, here is the recommended system requirements to play Fortnite on your PC:

  • ● OS - Windows 7/8/10
  • ● System type - 64-bit
  • ● Memory - 8 GB RAM
  • ● Video card - Nvidia GTX 660 or AMD Radeon HD 7870
  • ● HDD space - 20 GB
  • ● Processor - Core i5 2.8 GHz
  • ● DirectX - DirectX 11

Check your computer specifications against these requirements. If your computer doesn't meet these requirements, you will face lagging and high ping problems. If that's the case, update your hardware components to these requirements.

Even if your computer meets the minimum requirements, you will experience lags when playing Fortnite. In that case, follow the solution below:

Solution 2: Update Your Graphics Card Driver and Network Driver

Missing or outdated drivers can cause lag issues while playing Fortnite. Outdated or missing graphics card driver can cause FPS drops, while the network card driver can cause internet lag issues.

Verify that your drivers are updated even if they aren't. You can manually or automatically update the drivers. By downloading third-party software, the software will automatically update the drivers.

Solution 3: Restart Fortnite

For your high ping issues, the easiest and quickest way to solve them is by restarting the game. Rerun the game and check if the problem is resolved. If you still get a high ping, move to the next solution:

Solution 4: Reboot the Network

Another easy way to fix high ping problems is to turn off the router and restart the network. Rebooting your network may increase your internet connection speed and bring it back to normal. So, this solution may solve the high ping issue. Here's how to do it:

  • 1) Unplug your wireless router or modem from the power socket for up to 60 seconds.
  • 2) Plugin the network device again and wait until all the network indicators blink.

Hopefully, this will resolve your high ping or lag issues.

Solution 5: Close Bandwidth Hogging Apps

If you use iCloud, Dropbox, or OneDrive, or any other application that requires an internet connection to download or upload files, or if your family members are using the internet while you are playing, a high ping issue will occur while you are playing Fortnite on PC.

To resolve this issue, close the bandwidth hogging apps. But how will you do it? Follow these steps:

  • 1) Press Ctrl + Shift and Esc at the same time on your keyboard. The Task Manager will open.
  • 2) Right-click on the bandwidth using apps and then close those apps by ending the tasks.

Relaunch the Fortnite game on your PC and check if the issue has been resolved. Suppose it hasn't, move on to the next solution.

Solution 6: Disable the Proxy Server

If you are using a proxy server while playing the game on your PC, it may also be causing these issues you face. So, disable your proxy server to resolve this issue. Follow these steps to do it:

  • 1) Press the Windows logo key and the R button simultaneously on your keyboard. This will open up the Run dialog box. You have to type there inetcpl.cpl. Then press Enter.

  • 2) A window will pop up. Go to the Connections tab. From there, select “Never dial a connection” if you see it. It will be somewhere below Choose Setting if you need... Message. Then click on LAN settings.

  • 3) You have to uncheck the box next to Use a proxy server for your LAN. If the box is unchecked, then you have to check the box next to Automatically detect settings. Then click the OK button.

Then relaunch the Fortnite game to check if the issue is resolved.

Solution 7: Adjust the Game Settings

Improper game settings can cause lagging issues, FPS drops, or internet lags in the Fortnite game. If your graphics settings are too high for your computer hardware components, you should lower the graphics settings and then restart the game to check whether the lagging has been reduced or not.

Here is how you have to lower the graphics settings:

  • Navigate to the Fornite Settings. Then go to Video Settings. Check the following settings there:
  • ● Display Resolution: set the resolution to the same as your computer supports the resolution.
  • ● Quality: medium or low
  • ● View Distance: far or medium
  • ● Anti-Aliasing: off
  • ● Shadows: off
  • ● Textures: low
  • ● Show FPS: on
  • ● Effects: low

Solution 8: Change the Matchmaking Region

Another solution to solve your high ping and lag problems is by changing your matchmaking region. Follow these steps:

  • 1) Launch Fortnite game on your PC.

  • 2) There will be a menu button in the upper right corner of the interface. Click the gear button, which will open the Fortnite settings.

  • 3) By clicking the gear button, you will be taken to the Game tab. You will find the Matchmaking Region option there. Click on the right arrow to change your region. Select an area with less network latency. Then click on Apply button in the lower right corner to save the changes you made.

Simply join a squad to check if you have resolved the high ping issue. If it hasn't been resolved yet, then it may be a server issue. At many times, when these issues don't resolve, the problem is with the Fortnite server. Visit their forums to see if other gamers are facing these problems and check for a solution.
